Attendance and Lates
In order to ensure that all children arrive at school safely, parents are asked to inform the school whenever their child will be late or absent. Please call our attendance line or send a note in advance, in the case of an appointment or family holidays. If we have not heard from you, our office staff will attempt to contact you at home or at work. All students who arrive late will be required to enter through the main doors, and report to the office for a late slip before proceeding to class.
Minimizing Classroom Interruptions
In order to minimize classroom interruptions and disruption to our student learning, we ask that parents please abide by the following:
- Ensure students arrive to school on-time and are ready to learn.
- Ensure that students have all their belongs with them to start the day such as backpacks, lunches, mittens, hats, boots, permission forms, etc. Learn more about cold weather days.
- Please make end of the day arrangements at home before students leave for school. Calling the school to leave messages for students regarding where to meet, where to go, or who to go with presents challenges for the office and can create confusion. If you are going to be more than 15 minutes late picking up students please try to make alternative arrangements with family and friends. Office staff, teachers and administration often have meetings and other commitments after school.
- Plan to sign students out in the main office for doctor, dentist, and other appointments. Leave yourself extra time, as students can take their time organizing their items to leave. Phone calls to the office to have students waiting for parents when they arrive is not necessary with proper time management.
- Earl Grey School is a secure building. Only staff, students, and volunteers are permitted in the school proper during regular school hours. Learn more about our School Security.
Contacting Teachers
- Messages
Can be sent via email at the beginning of the day. Please don’t send an urgent email during the day, as teachers are teaching and not checking their email. - Appointments
Can be made in advance for a mutually agreed time and day via email.
Please help by being respectful of our teacher’s time and the learning of all our students. Earl Grey School is a welcoming, inclusive, respectful, safe and caring community with the support from everyone.
Family Vacations – Extended Absences
The Alberta School Act requires regular attendance and it is recommended that vacations and extended absences take place during scheduled breaks.
If you are planning to remove your child from school, please contact the school office and the classroom teacher. If the absence is more than one week, we request that parents complete and sign an Extended Absence Form. Please note that the school cannot grant approval to be absent, but simply records the parental intent to have the student discontinue attendance. While we appreciate that travel provides valuable learning opportunities, we know that extended absences can have an impact on achievement. Most of the learning activities that take place in the classroom cannot be replicated when a child is absent and teachers cannot provide extra programming or homework during extended breaks.
Attendance Expectations at the CBE
Regular and punctual attendance is foundational to student learning, academic achievement and long-term success. The CBE Administrative Regulation 6020 - Attendance of Students applies to all students, and outlines the responsibilities for students, parents and school staff.
