Weekly Update Oct. 9-13 | Gratitude, Volunteers, School Council Meeting, Art Cards, Skip the Depot, Forms,
Hello Earl Grey Families,
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life; it turns what we have into enough and more. It turns a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of the past, brings peace for today and creates vision for tomorrow.” Author: Melody Beattie
All of us at Earl Grey are very grateful for the support you as parents have shown the school. We are grateful for the dedicated and caring staff and are especially grateful for the wonderful students who come to Earl Grey each day. We would like to share some highlights on the power of gratitude with you:
- People who are grateful report increased feelings of happiness, hopefulness, positivity, energy and overall life satisfaction.
- Gratitude helps kids feel better about school and makes educators feel less emotionally exhausted
- Studies have found that keeping a gratitude journal can increase people’s happiness and overall positive mood
- Grateful children are more interested and satisfied with their school lives, are more kind and helpful, and are more socially integrated.
- Studies have found that gratitude journaling in the classroom can improve students’ mood and that a curriculum designed to help students appreciate the benefits they have gained from others can successfully teach children to think more gratefully and to exhibit more grateful behavior
- Gratitude has been described as “social glue” that fortifies relationships
- Research suggests that gratitude may be associated with many benefits for individuals, including better physical and psychological health, increased happiness and life satisfaction, decreased materialism, and more
Every day it is evident that our students demonstrate gratitude. The staff feels this gratitude and all of us are very grateful to our families and community for your continued support. As you gather as a family over the weekend, please pause and take the time to go around the dinner table and express what each of you are grateful for. Its amazing how powerful these messages can be.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Update From School Council
School Council Meeting
Wednesday October 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Learning Commons
Agenda attached here: Oct. 10, 2023 Agenda
Art Cards by Kids
For several years, we have held successful fundraisers for School Council through Art Cards by Kids. Parents were thrilled to see their children’s creations turned into greeting cards, plaques, tree ornaments, or puzzles. All the items are of great quality and were incredible for gift-giving. Last year we raised over $1200 for Council initiatives.
In the next two weeks in class, your child will be asked to create a new work of art. You will have the opportunity to purchase a set of greeting cards with your child’s artwork on the front and their name and age on the back. Plaques, tree ornaments, and puzzles will also be available.
Students will be asked to create a winter holiday-themed card, however, if you wish for a specific theme, please notify your student’s teacher by 9:00 pm on Monday, October 9 by email. The teacher can then remind your child of your preference. Please also let your child know your preference.
In the past, students have also created thank you, birthday, self-portrait, or general-purpose cards with only artwork and no message.
If you have more than one child at the school, you may wish to ask each of your children to create a different theme. (The company suggests not to choose Halloween since the cards will not be ready by then.)

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nancy Slukynski. Again, please contact your student’s teacher by email before 9:00 pm on Monday, October 9 by email if you prefer a type of card.
